A SHORT WALK TO TYRESTA

A Panoramic view of a Beautiful trail walkway at Tyresta National Park

Just 20 kilometers south of Stockholm, Tyresta National Park is one of the best places to experience authentic Swedish wilderness without traveling far from the city. Established in 1993, the park covers more than 5,000 hectares, including 2,000 hectares of protected old-growth forest. It is the largest area of untouched forest in southern Sweden, offering visitors a look at landscapes that have remained unchanged for centuries.
The forest is dominated by pine and spruce trees, many of which are over 400 years old. Trails of different lengths and difficulty levels are available, making it easy to choose between a short family walk or a full-day hike through more remote parts of the park. Small lakes, marshes, and rocky terrain add variety to the hiking experience.
Wildlife in Tyresta is another highlight. Moose and roe deer are the largest animals you are likely to encounter. Red foxes, badgers, and hares also live here, while smaller creatures such as squirrels, frogs, and newts are commonly seen. The diversity of habitats also supports rare insects and fungi that depend on ancient forests.
For birdwatchers and photographers, Tyresta is an excellent destination. Several species of woodpeckers, including the black and three-toed woodpecker, are often spotted in the park. Owls such as the tawny owl and pygmy owl nest in tree hollows, while crossbills and tits are common throughout the year. During migration seasons, many other birds pass through the area, giving photographers the chance to capture a wide range of species in their natural environment.
A trip to Tyresta is straightforward from Stockholm, making it ideal for a weekend outing. Whether you are interested in hiking, observing wildlife, or photographing birds, the park offers a convenient and rewarding way to explore Sweden’s natural heritage. It is a reminder that true wilderness can be found surprisingly close to the city.
